Switching medications

Questions to ask your prescriber, not a plan to do it yourself

Read this first

Changing medication is a decision for you and your prescriber together. This page is a list of questions to ask them, so you go in prepared. It contains no dosing instructions and is not medical advice. Never start, stop, or change a medication on your own.

Questions to ask before a switch

"Why are we changing, and what are we hoping improves?"
"How exactly do I transition? Taper, overlap, or stop and start?"
"What's the timeline, and when will we know if it's working?"
"What side effects are normal at first, and which mean I should call you?"
"Is there anything I should avoid during the change?"
"How do I reach you if something feels wrong?"

Track the transition

Use the medication & how-you-feel log during the switch and bring it to your follow-up.
