Requesting workplace accommodations
A template letter, and the basics behind it
Before you send anything
This is a starting template, not legal advice. Laws and processes vary, and your situation may have specifics. For anything high-stakes, consult HR, a disability rights organization, or an employment attorney.
In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires many employers to engage in an "interactive process" and provide reasonable accommodations. You generally request a change at work, not permission.
The template letter
Dear [Manager / HR],
I'm writing to request a reasonable accommodation to help me perform my role effectively. I have a condition that affects [focus / organization / etc.]. The following adjustments would help:
- [Accommodation 1]
- [Accommodation 2]
I'm happy to discuss alternatives and to provide documentation through the appropriate process. Thank you for considering this.
